The German Tower, a striking World War II relic, is open to the public once again! Built by the German occupiers in the 1940s, this former observation tower tells the story of Poperinge in wartime. Later, during the Cold War, the Belgian army kept watch from the tower. Since May 2025, the restored tower has been open as a viewpoint, offering impressive panoramic views.
Put on your walking shoes and discover this unique place via two walking routes:
A 4 km circular route starts at the tower itself.
Alternatively, you can opt for the 8 km walk from the centre of Poperinge.
Along the way, you will walk alongside the Poperinge Canal and through picturesque rural areas. You will also see relics of the former Flugplatz Peselhoek airfield, including the wall of an authentic aircraft hangar.
There is a new picnic spot halfway through the walk where you can catch your breath.
Both walks were made possible thanks to support from the Province of West Flanders.
You can pick up free brochures about the walks at Tourism Poperinge or view them digitally here.
