Currently, the Weeuwhof is not open to the public due to renovation works. This site is being transformed into an innovative form of housing including co-housing and inclusive living.
The Weeuwhof is located in the center of Poperinge. In the little Saint-Anna Street, there used to be a hop field that was cleared in the 18th century. At this place, Canon Proventier had several small houses built for single elderly women, the so-called ‘weeuwen’ or widows.
The complex dates from 1769 and consists of small white houses with an entrance gate and an inner courtyard with a centrally located sandstone water pump. The courtyard was dedicated to Saint Anne, patron saint of widows and lacemakers.
The original residents earned their income from lace making. The statue “De Spellewerkeege” at the entrance of the courtyard refers to this.
