Mendinghem Military Cemetery

In July 1917, in preparation for the coming Allied offensive, 'Casualty Clearing Stations' were set up at three locations called Mendinghem, Dozinghem and Bandaghem. A special ward was attached to Mendinghem, where soldiers were cared for under guard because they had self-inflicted wounds, hoping to get off the front that way. After their recovery, a court martial and severe punishment awaited them. There are 2442 dead buried in this cemetery.
