Proven has been one of the sub-municipalities of Poperinge since 1977. Proven was first mentioned in writing in 1167 as Provenda, from prebend (ecclesiastical source of income). Several lordships were established, of which two remnants remain today: Couthof Castle and De Lovie Castle.
De Galge (gallows)
Contrary to what the name of this peculiar brick construction suggests, this was formerly not a gallows, but a landmark in the maze with wood of the Couthof domain.
