Together with Roesbrugge, Haringe forms the Poperinge sub-municipality of Roesbrugge-Haringe. The first written mention of Haringe dates back to 899, but its history goes back much further. For instance, traces of prehistoric habitation have been found, and artifacts from the Roman era also demonstrate its presence.
The Yser flows into Belgium past Haringe, forming part of the national border there. The Heidebeek also forms part of the Belgian-French border.
Haringe was therefore formerly known as the stomping ground of smugglers, called "blauwers." In the village center, you will find the statue of Karel de Blauwer, a legendary figure representing all smugglers of the past.
