The Great War

A unique story
Poperinge's wartime history looks different from most Flemish towns. The town was unoccupied during WWI. British soldiers could escape the horrors of war there for a while.

After establishing a clubhouse, now known as Talbot House, in December 1915, Poperinge even became the refuge for entertainment. Soldiers could have carefree fun, enjoy themselves and, yes, even unwind for a while. There was entertainment and music for soldiers of every rank.

But there were also casualties. Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery is just one of the reminders of the horrendous war. Poperinge was home to the largest evacuation hospital in the Ypres Salient.
