The In Flanders Fields route (82 km) explores the southern Westhoek. The focus is on the many relics and monuments that remind one of WWI. The route starts in Ypres, from where you will drive along the Ypres Salient, the bow-formed front line around Ypres where the troops fought for four ears on end. The military cemeteries that dot the landscape remind the visitor of those tragic fights. From the Ypres Salient, you will travel to the woody Heuvelland where hills like the Kemmelberg, the Rode Berg and the Scherpenberg dominate the landscape. On this trip you will also come across the language-border town of Mesen. On your way back, you will cross Poperinge’s Hoppeland. |
